Sindh’s Wet Woes: CM Murad Rallies for Flood Resilience

Date:

From Sukkur to Naushehroferoze, Sindh Faces Deluge Devastation

KARACHI (Aug 18) – In a heart-wrenching turn of events, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has convened a high-level emergency meeting to address the province’s alarming rain crisis. The meeting, held at the CM House on Sunday morning, painted a grim picture of the situation, with several districts reeling from heavy downpours ranging from 227 mm to 101 mm.

The worst-hit areas include Sukkur, Dadu, Jacobabad, and Naushehro Feroze, where the inundated roads and streets have posed a grave threat to the lives and property of the people. Undeterred, CM Murad has issued a clarion call to the entire government machinery, including district administrations, local bodies, and the Irrigation Department, to spring into action and protect the affected communities.

“I want to see the entire government machinery, including district administration, local bodies, particularly in the rain-affected areas working on the roads, helping people and the Irrigation department patrolling on the embankments of the canals and distributaries to avoid breaches,” the CM demanded, his voice laced with the urgency of the situation.

Rain Ravages: The CM’s meeting was attended by a host of officials, including ministers, advisors, mayors, and heads of various departments. The gathered data painted a harrowing picture, with Sukkur receiving a staggering 227 mm of rain, Dadu 181 mm, Jacobabad 104 mm, Khairpur 101 mm, and Naushehroferoze a whopping 69 mm.

The Deluge Dilemma: The commissioners of the affected districts reported the devastation, with roads and low-lying areas submerged and power outages crippling the dewatering efforts. CM Murad immediately directed the Minister of Energy, Nasir Shah, to intervene and ensure the power distribution companies prioritize the pumping stations, freeing them from the clutches of load-shedding.

But the crisis doesn’t end there. The Irrigation Department has also sounded the alarm on the flood situation, with the catchments in the Kirthar ranges located in Baluchistan posing a formidable challenge. However, the CM has directed the department to mobilize its resources and closely monitor the vulnerable areas to ensure the existing infrastructure can withstand the forecasted floods.

Rallying for Resilience: Amid the chaos, the PDMA has sprung into action, providing essential relief supplies, including tents, mosquito nets, mattresses, and hygiene kits, to the affected regions. But the road to recovery is long, and CM Murad has made it clear that this is just the beginning of Sindh’s fight against the elements. As the province grapples with the deluge, the CM’s resolve to build a more resilient Sindh shines through, setting the stage for a comprehensive battle against the ravages of Mother Nature.
